I’ve never been happier in my entire life, Cort. But I’ll be damned if I let you slip out of my hands. I don’t even know why I came to you like that before. “You know, the first time that I asked you, I messed it up. There was no way that he was going to mess this up with his fumbling. This isn’t about cooking and cleaning or watching my son.” He bit his lip and concentrated. “This isn’t about awesome seats to a concert. As they sat down, he wiped her face again and smiled. She only hoped that he did not come here to break up with her. “Okay,” Courtney said clueless to his intentions. “I need to talk to you about something, and it couldn’t wait.” “What are you doing here?” She tried to muster a smile, even in her sadness. “I’m fine now,” she said, holding him tighter. Are you alright?” he asked, moving her chin up to see her face better. He could feel the need and vulnerability oozing from her as he held her in his tight embrace. Electricity exploded between the two as they touched. He stood up to receive her, giving her a big hug. She had never been so happy as to see his face. Courtney rounded the corner with red, puffy eyes and went straight to him with open arms. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Indeed, not all Big Historians are even historians. Not all Big Historians use Christian's threshold of increasing complexity to structure their history. One of those planets is our Earth, a rocky planet with a single moon, a moon that revolves around the Earth while the Earth revolves around the Sun. And gravity acted on the left-over "stuff" from the formation of the Sun to create the other planets and moons in our solar system. About 4.5 billion years ago our Sun, an average-sized star, formed as gravity compressed gases just as it does when creating other stars. The heat within stars and the heat produced when stars explode create more complex and heavier elements by fusing atoms together. Gravity compressed clouds of hydrogen gas that formed a few billion years after the Big Bang, a compression that created increasing heat and mass, until finally the first stars "lit" up. Gravity is a central actor in making the universe more complex after the Big Bang since it draws objects together. Eventually our Solar System and Earth (Threshold 4) emerged. Then, more complex and heavier elements emerged (Threshold 3). ![]() While relatively simple, these early elements and forces were enough for more complex phenomena to emerge such as stars and galaxies (Threshold 2). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The story unfolds quite literally through the eyes, ears, and other senses of the main undead antagonist. Told in first person narrative, this story paints a picture of vivid imagery coupled with heavy metaphor. If you’re a fan of Francis Ford Coppola’s movie rendition of Bram Stoker’s Dracula then Endless Hunger will be very appealing to you. While I normally refrain from diving into a new work while I’m in the middle of writing one of my own, the concept of the book intrigued me. ![]() Knowing that I have a slight penchant for things vampiric, Narcisse Navarre (say that three times fast, I dare you :) asked if I might be interested in taking a look at her brand new novella, Endless Hunger. What this says about me, well I’ll let future psychoanalysts debate that. It is a comfort, much like a cold slice of apple pie (yes, I said cold. Apparently I like that!Įverything I described above can be found in her book Island Beneath the Sea. Magical realism expresses a primarily realistic view of the real world while also adding magical elements. Ehh, and that is? I just checked Wikipedia. Most of her books belong to the genre, magical realism. She often mixes historical events with family and love stories. Her characters are authentic, courageous and strong. Her writing style is dreamy, mysterious and powerful. Like no other she knows how to describe a beautiful scenery, without endless details. Isabel Allende writes very colourful and visual. ![]() Of all those millions of books that you can read, I always choose to read an Allende. Mike Ashley (not the Sports Direct, House of Fraser and Newcastle United owner) is well known in the book world for editing the long-running Mammoth Book series of short stories, as well as the four-volume History of the Science Fiction Magazine and several other anthologies during the past 40-odd years. So imagine my delight when Glimpses of the Unknown came into my world. I’ve got so many short horror anthologies that I must have the same stories repeated several times over, and there comes a point when collectors like me begin to wonder if they’ll ever find anything new. It's probably because I love history, because I don't really enjoy contemporary mysteries. Lately I have been into historical mysteries.
